The arrival of the whale shark in Holbox, is one of the biggest attractions in the Mexican Caribbean, people from all over the world are anxiously waiting for the opportunity to swim next to this giant of the ocean, it can be 15 meters long and weigh up to 13 tons, contrary to its imposing size, it feeds on plankton and is completely harmless.
On summer vacations, the area located between Holbox and Isla Contoy registers the highest concentration of this species, making it a highly demanded activity at this time of year. For many people it represents the dream of a lifetime.
It´s the largest fish in the world and its presence means large amounts of food, which is why it is common to see them coexisting with other species such as dolphins, turtles, mantas and fish. Seeing the swimming of these animals in their natural environment is an almost spiritual spectacle, their slow and fluid movements through the warm waters make us appreciate the complexity of life.
Divers and snorkellers can share swimming with the whale shark, since the presence of the human being does not alter their activities such as feeding, of course, there are measures that maintain healthy coexistence between species, such as controlling the number of people entering the water and maintaining a certain distance when swimming.
