Giant turtle nest at Cancun coast

Excellent news for the coasts of Quintana Roo!

The number one destination in the country, at 6:30 p.m. yesterday, witnessed the first leather back turtle spawning, this is not a frequent species in the Mexican Caribbean, as only two nests have been registered in recent years. What is a surprise, because it represents a preview of the estimated dates for the official spawning season, activists attribute this fact to the low presence of tourism in Cancun.

With this, the countdown begins for one of the most anticipated natural phenomena in the Mexican Caribbean, it should be noted that there is no fixed site for this event, in previous years it has also been registered in Puerto Morelos, Xcacel Xcaelito and this year in Cancún.

The leatherback turtle specimen deposited the surprising amount of 120 eggs in the sand, a rare number for this species, since they normally deposit between 70 and 80 eggs, so there is a possibility that a part of these eggs will not be fertilized.

In the adult stage, this species can reach a length of 2.3 meters and a weight of 916 kilos, dimensions that make it the largest known sea turtle.

For the time being, it is expected that in the next dates turtle species like Carey, Caguama, Verde and now Lute will also arrive.
